Minneapolis, Minnesota' had a National Football League team, long before the Vikings, named the Marines, who played from 1921 to 1924. The franchise was reactivated as the Red Jackets from 1929 and 1930. The team played at least some of its games at Nicollet Park. The team was originally founded in 1905 by John Dunn and Val Ness, and was quite successful until losing a number of players to the Rock Island Independents in 1919. Former Gopher Bobby Marshall played for the Marines. Nate Barragar played for the Jackets.
